Frequently Asked Questions

Technical

Q.

Does this software affect the colour of the prints?

A.

Generally No. EcoPrint interacts with the native print driver and selects a Draft or Normal print depending on which option (Internal/External) is selected. The quality of these prints depends on the DPI settings of the printer. Typical draft/normal DPI's are either 300/600 or 600/1200 depending on the type of printer.

With most printers a difference between an 'Internal' print and an 'External' print wont be visible when printing black text. When printing graphics or high resolution images the differences become slightly more noticeable. This is great for the office environment because the vast majority of printing is text only which can be printed using EcoPrint thus saving 50% toner on all 'Internal' prints without sacrificing on print quality.

We find that a magnifying glass usually helps distinguish the difference.

Q.

Would the user know this programme is in use?

A.

Yes. The user chooses to print as normal from an application. The print job is then intercepted by EcoPrint and the user is presented with a simple choice of 'Internal' or 'External'. If the 'Internal' option is chosen less ink is used. If the 'External' option is chosen, more ink is used.

Q.

Does EcoPrint affect the way the user prints from their PC?

A.

No. The user will continue with their normal printing habits. The only change is that a step is added to ask the user whether the document is intended for 'Internal' or 'External' use. Because the vast majority of documents printed within the office are for internal use only, it is acceptable for less ink to be used to print these documents which will save huge amounts of money on printer ink.

Q.

How much space will this use in the PC's memory?

A.

EcoPrint has a very small 'Footprint'. The total memory used is only a few MB's. The hard disk space required for the client installation is also only a few MB's.

Q.

Does EcoPrint work with XP, Vista and Windows 7?

A.

Yes. EcoPrint has been designed to work with all current Microsoft operating systems. This also includes server operating system Windows 2000 server, Windows Server 2003 and Windows Server 2008.

Q.

Is there a maximum number of computers on a network that the EcoPrint software can be installed on?

A.

No. There are no system related minimum or maximum numbers and it is only limited by the number of licenses purchased

Q.

Is EcoPrint software designed to work only with certain makes or types of Printer?

A.

No. EcoPrint software has been written to work with any printer make or model currently available including Multi Function Devices

Q.

Does EcoPrint affect the speed of printing?

A.

No. EcoPrint does not impact the speed of printing. In fact for all documents which the 'Internal' option is selected, printing time is greatly reduced.

Q.

Is EcoPrint an Active Directory exclusive product?

A.

The EcoPrint Administrator Console has been designed for use with Active Directory. This is because it is the underlying directory service for all Microsoft business products. For these reasons (and the fact that it is highly customisable) EcoPrint utilises the Microsoft Management Console (MMC) for its management interface. EcoPrint uses four methods to search for machines on which to install the EcoPrint client. These are designed to give the greatest flexibility to accommodate multiple environments. Using Active Directory, Microsoft Network, IP Address/Subnet and MAC address searching all machines in the business can be searched for. Once a list of machines has been gathered by using one or more of the search methods, the client can be remotely installed to all clients or a selection of clients as chosen by the administrator

Q.

Can we link EcoPrint into MS system centre?

A.

The EcoPrint Administrator Console runs as a Microsoft Management Console (MMC) "Snap-In" which means it can be easily linked into Microsoft System Centre as well as other MMC based management products.

Q.

Can EcoPrint software scan for client computers across Wide Area Networks (WAN's)?

A.

Yes. As long as the client computers are listed in Active Directory, the EcoPrint Management Console will be able to scan for them and list the EcoPrint status of those computers.

Licensing

Q.

Is EcoPrint charged per user or per printer?

A.

EcoPrint licenses are sold per user not per printer i.e. If 10 people use 1 printer 10 EcoPrint licenses will be required.

Q.

Is the license fee for the life of the PC or per year?

A.

The license fee is a one off fee for life.

Q.

Why do I require a license for each desktop and not for each printer?

A.

Printing is generated from each desktop and not the printer, therefore, all desktops wanting to benefit from the EcoPrint solution and save on printing costs will require a license.

Q.

Do users get free bug updates?

A.

Yes. All bug updates are free. These updates will be made available via the website www.saveprintertoner.co.uk and via email to registered users.

Operational

Q.

Why should I purchase an EcoPrint license instead of just setting my PC to print in draft mode?

A.

By using the unique EcoPrint software and it's management interface system administrators have the ability to easily review and analyse the financial savings made per client device when printing in Economy mode. The intuitive user interface also quickly and easily allows the end user to print in Presentation mode per print job as and when needed.

A.

EcoPrint software licenses can be purchased from one of our Resellers who in many cases will accept credit card payments
